Akebi is a deciduous climbing shrub that grows wild in the mountains. Among them, akebi vines harvested from the foothills of the Tsugaru region—especially Mount Iwamoto—are considered to be of particularly high quality. In the past, the area was even known as “Akebi Mountain,” but today only about 10% of the harvest volume from its peak period remains.
Since the Edo period, baskets made using akebi vines have been created through highly refined handcraft techniques passed down from generation to generation, drawing on the wisdom of ancestors who lived in harmony with nature. These baskets combine remarkable strength with natural beauty, and even in modern life they evoke a sense of warmth and nostalgia.
Miyamoto Craft was founded in 1947. Inheriting techniques unique to Aomori Prefecture, the workshop continues to carefully handcraft each basket by hand using precious mountain materials such as akebi vine and wild grape bark. Beyond the beauty of the craftsmanship itself, these baskets can be enjoyed for many years when used with care. They are not inexpensive, but when considering the quality of the materials, technical skill, durability, practicality, and beauty, they are truly exceptional pieces—well suited as part of an interior as well.
This charming round basket is perfect as a bread basket or shopping basket, and also works beautifully as an interior accent or flower basket. It is woven in a fine kodashi weave using carefully selected, straight akebi vines.
Care Instructions:
Avoid long-term storage in direct sunlight or high-humidity environments. If dust or dirt accumulates, gently wash with tap water using a scrubbing brush or soft brush. Drain well, wipe lightly, and allow to dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
Material: Akebi vine
Size: Approx. max diameter 25 cm / height 20 cm (handle height approx. 26 cm)
Please note that as each piece is handmade, slight variations in size may occur.
