Akebi is a deciduous climbing shrub that grows wild in the mountains. Akebi vines harvested from the foothills of the Tsugaru region—especially Mount Iwamoto—are regarded as particularly high quality. In the past, the area was even known as “Akebi Mountain,” but today only about 10% of the harvest volume from its peak period remains.

Since the Edo period, baskets made from akebi vines have been created through intricate handcraft techniques passed down from ancestors who made use of the region’s abundant natural resources. These baskets combine exceptional durability with refined beauty, and even in modern life they convey a gentle warmth and sense of nostalgia.

Miyamoto Craft was founded in 1947. Inheriting techniques unique to Aomori Prefecture, the workshop continues to carefully handcraft each basket using precious mountain materials such as akebi vine and wild grape bark. With proper care, these baskets can be enjoyed for many years. While they are not inexpensive, considering the quality of the materials, craftsmanship, durability, practicality, and beauty, they are truly outstanding pieces—well suited as part of an interior.

This charming hand basket features a cute ring-shaped handle. The ring is wide enough to slip your arm through comfortably, making it easy to carry. It pairs beautifully with summer outfits and also works well as an interior accent. The basket is made using a rare technique in which the vines are woven vertically.

Care Instructions:
Avoid long-term storage in direct sunlight or high-humidity environments. If dust or dirt accumulates, gently wash with tap water using a scrubbing brush or soft brush. Drain well, wipe lightly, and allow to dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
