我戸幹男商店は明治41年(1908年）ろくろの町山中温泉にて我戸木工所として創業しました。長い歴史を受け継いだ我戸幹男商店の木地士は、天然の素材が生み出した美しい木目を豪快にあらわに残したままひとつひとつを丁寧に挽き上げていきます。芸術の領域までに達したそのフォルムの仕上がりの美しさと実用性を兼ね備えた製品の数々は、いづれも世界にも愛される日本の代表としての風格があります。

山中漆器のろくろ技術には４００年以上の歴史があります。他の追随を許さない技術力。その中でも、特にこの「加飾挽き」の技法が特に挙げられるそうです。間隔の揃った平行筋や一気に刃物を動かす渦螺旋筋は40から50種類あるとか。それぞれの技法が、際立つようにシンプルにデザインされた加飾椀、その伝統を継承しながらも現代のライフスタイルにも使いやすく仕上げられています。

Gato Mikio Shoten was founded in 1908 in Yamanaka Onsen, a town renowned for its wood-turning tradition, originally as Gato Woodworks. Carrying forward this long history, the kiji-shi (woodturners) carefully shape each piece on the lathe, boldly revealing the beautiful natural grain created by the material itself. The resulting forms, which reach an artistic level of refinement while maintaining excellent functionality, embody the dignified presence of Japanese craftsmanship admired around the world.

By fusing high-level Yamanaka lacquerware techniques—such as precise woodturning, finely prepared wood bodies, and transparent wiped lacquer finishes—with a strong sense of practical beauty and Japanese aesthetics, Gato Mikio Shoten continues to pursue new heights while creating lacquerware that fits naturally into contemporary daily life.

[Decorative Turned Bowl]

Yamanaka lacquerware has over 400 years of history in lathe work, supported by technical mastery that allows no equal. Among these techniques, “kashoku-biki” (decorative turning) is particularly notable. There are said to be 40 to 50 variations, including evenly spaced parallel lines and dynamic spiral grooves carved in a single motion of the blade. The bowl is simply designed to highlight these techniques, inheriting tradition while remaining easy to use in modern lifestyles.

Created with the aim of becoming a long-selling everyday tool, this bowl is simple, beautiful, and stylish. Its elegance is exactly as it appears, yet despite the high level of craftsmanship, it feels light, unpretentious, and perfectly suited for daily use at the table.
