1862年初代清助は村芝居の小道具をつくっていました。特に踊り面の職人として知られ、屋号に「めんや」と名付けています。

明治初期の四代目は、上質の二俣和紙を手に入れるために、金沢市尾張町に移り店を構えました。この頃から、中島めんやは近代的加賀人形の基礎を築いたといわれています。

昭和の時代には、ひゃくまんさんの原型ともいわれる「加賀八幡起上り」が、金沢の郷土玩具として全国に広まりました。

現在は、七代目。手作りにこだわり、昔ながらの技法を生かしつつ、新商品づくりにも意欲的に取り組んでいます。

こちらは指で首に触れると揺れる張子のいぬ。

平安時代から、犬は飼い主に忠誠を誓い、魔を取り除き、快活で成長力があり、お産も軽いと言われてきた動物。御所の清涼殿に狛犬の像を置いたのが始まりとされています。犬を美しく象徴したこちらの張子細工は、郷土玩具の中でも傑作とされています。他の張子よりは少し大ぶりで存在感も抜群。ユーモラスな表情と素朴さがかわいい。飾りとしても子供の玩具としても。
