1862年初代清助は村芝居の小道具をつくっていました。特に踊り面の職人として知られ、屋号に「めんや」と名付けています。

明治初期の四代目は、上質の二俣和紙を手に入れるために、金沢市尾張町に移り店を構えました。この頃から、中島めんやは近代的加賀人形の基礎を築いたといわれています。

昭和の時代には、ひゃくまんさんの原型ともいわれる「加賀八幡起上り」が、金沢の郷土玩具として全国に広まりました。

現在は、七代目。手作りにこだわり、昔ながらの技法を生かしつつ、新商品づくりにも意欲的に取り組んでいます。

加賀に古くから作られている珍しい虎の郷土玩具。お節句に飾られ、その勇敢な姿、様子から、悪魔を追い払い勇武を念じる縁起ものとされています。こちらの張子は、鮮やかな色と軽やかさと丸みを帯びている様子がとっても愛くるしく福を呼ぶ玩具としても愛されてきました。
指で首に触れると揺れる様子は、見ているだけでも楽しい。飾りとしても子供の玩具としても。
